Yes, in many cases you can transfer your prescription from one pharmacy to another. This is helpful if you move, change pharmacies, travel, or find a location that better fits your needs.
To transfer a prescription, the new pharmacy usually needs your name, date of birth, medication name, and the pharmacy where the prescription is currently located. The new pharmacy then contacts the old pharmacy to request the transfer.
However, not every prescription can be transferred the same way. Some controlled substances may have special restrictions. Prescriptions with no refills remaining cannot usually be transferred because there is nothing left to transfer. In that case, your doctor may need to send a new prescription.
If your prescription was already transferred once, there may also be limits depending on the medication and applicable rules.
Transfers can take time, especially if the original pharmacy is busy or closed. If you need medication soon, request the transfer before you run out.
